Uber Regulations; Uber Frustrating
Michael Brehne, is adamant in his support for ride-sharing services and endorses them as a safe alternative to drinking and driving.
Despite opposition from traditional taxi companies, Mr. Brehne, from the Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne, believes affordable transportation alternatives are vital to decreasing DUI incidences and urges residents to keep an open mind toward the ride-sharing programs.
“These companies, like Uber, allow residents to enjoy a night out without the repercussions of drunk driving,” said Brehne, who is not only an attorney but an owner of custom motorcycles and proponent of safe driving. “You can go out with friends, enjoy a few drinks, and not have to worry about breaking the bank to get home.”
Under the new regulations put forth by the Orlando City Council, ride-sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft are now able to operate legally. These programs provide affordable and reliable transportation services to their customers as well as business opportunities to their drivers. Through mobile apps, these alternative cab companies connect riders to drivers using their own personal vehicle.
“It’s technology at its best,” Brehne said. “Plus no matter the rate, it would save you countless dollars in attorney and court fees incurred by a DUI. Not to mention, ride-sharing saves lives.”
However, starting February 1, a city ordinance will require these companies to charge the same per mile minimum as traditional taxis. Drivers will also be required to pay a permit fee of $250.
“This country was built on the principles of free market. I am decisively against an ordinance that will impede individuals access to services by charging rates in excess of what they normally would just to appease the standard taxi services,” Brehne said. “In an economy where jobs are in short demand, people are turning to self-employment opportunities, such as utilizing personal property and private vehicles to supplement their income. Ordinances which inhibit consumers from utilizing competitive services and people to pursue financial compensation outside of the traditional means should not be allowed.”
