Tip For Driving In The Rain
April showers bring May flowers … and Florida’s summer storms! Driving in Florida is a way of life. Driving through rain in Florida is basically unavoidable. But driving in rain doesn’t need to be a harrowing experience. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind if you find yourself caught in the rain.
Turn on your headlights
Always turn on your headlights in rainy conditions, even if it is just a light sprinkle. The extra light not only helps you see the road, but also helps fellow drivers see your vehicle. Remember though, never use your high beams. High beams reflect off the water droplets and can obstruct your vision.
Slow down
Rain affects visibility, stopping time, car breaks, overall road conditions, and more. Always allow yourself more travel time and decrease your speed. It’s better to take your time and arrive to your destination safely, than risk accident or injury.
Allow more time for stopping
Water can effect breaks. Make sure you give yourself more stopping time. When possible take your foot off the accelerator and allow your vehicle to slow on its own before applying the brake. This will minimize your chances of hydroplaning. It is also important to increase the distance between yourself and the car in front of you. That way if they stop fast, you will have more time to react.
Be extra cautious on roads after a dry spell
During long periods of drought, oil and gasoline residue build up on the roads. When it rains the first time, water combines with the residue and creates a slick, dangerous road surface. Exercise extreme caution in the first few hours of a storm.
Avoid puddles
Try to avoid puddles if you can. However, this is not always possible. If you have to drive through a puddle, tap your brakes lightly afterwards. The light tapping helps dry off your brakes.
If all else, pull over
If you feel uncomfortable or the rain becomes too heavy, find a safe spot to park until the storm passes. Try to find a rest area, service plaza, or other protected area. However, if this is not an option, make sure you pull off the roadway completely, away from any guard rails, and turn on your emergency flashers. Florida downpours rarely last too long and you’ll feel safer once you continue on your way with better visibility.
Unfortunately, accidents do happen. If you find yourself in an accident on the roadways, contact the Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne.
