How to Drive Safely During Bike Week
How to Drive Safely During Daytona Bike Week
Bike Week brings hundreds of thousands of bikers, vendors and attendees to Daytona. But it can also bring an influx of motorcycle accidents. While bikers are responsible for wearing protective gear and driving safely, motorists must also have a heightened level of awareness to help avoid unnecessary accidents.
Tips for Avoiding Accidents with Motorcycles
- Give bikers some space. Just because a motorcycle is much smaller than a car or truck doesn't mean it's safe to follow closely. Should a biker crash in front of your vehicle, you need time to react and avoid running over the motorcyclist or bike. Stay at least 4 seconds behind a biker in traffic.
- Be on the lookout. Bike Week ends March 13, but the warmer weather means more and more people will be riding motorcycles until next winter. Make a conscious effort to look for motorcyclists when you pull out into traffic, merge or cross a lane of traffic.
- Look for empty spots in traffic. The absence of a car or truck doesn't necessarily indicate an empty spot in traffic. Take time to look for a motorcycle — which may be cruising on the far side of the lane — before turning or merging.
There are plenty of ways we can all share the road. Let's keep the 75th Daytona Bike Week fun and safe for everyone!
