One of the advantages to living in Florida is easy access to the beach. No matter where you live in the state, you’re never too far from the coast. A day at the beach with your family is a great way to take a mini-vacation this summer, or any time of the year.

When you go to the beach to have fun, but don’t forget to also be careful. There are many dangers near the ocean. Follow these tips to make sure your next trip to the beach is fun and safe.

Water Safety Tips

The US Lifesaving Association recommends that you learn how to swim before you spend time at the beach, and only swim in areas with a lifeguard. Remember that swimming in the ocean is different than swimming in a pool. Keep an eye on the current and the waves, and make sure you heed any posted warning signs.

The ocean can hide many hazards. Make sure you look out for vegetation and rocks that could be hidden by the water. When you’re out on a pier, dock, or boat, don’t dive into the water unless you are absolutely certain it’s safe to do so. Diving into water that’s too shallow or has obstructions underneath the surface can lead to serious spinal cord injuries.

Non-swimmers should wear life vests in the water at all times. With currents and waves, even shallow water can be dangerous if you don’t know how to swim. It’s also a good idea to keep a close eye on children when you’re at the beach. Kids, even if they’re good swimmers, should still wear life vests when near or in the water for their safety.

Look for signs posted notifying you of rip currents in the area, and be aware of them when you’re in the water. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t try to fight it. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you swim out of it, and then swim to safety.

Additional Beach Safety Tips

The beach is a perfect place for a picnic. Follow good food safety practices at the beach to avoid any problems. Keep your refrigerated picnic items packed in a cooler on ice to prevent foodborne illnesses. If you grill, make sure to cook all items thoroughly. Food that you don’t eat should be packed away safely, or discarded.

Sunburn can increase your skin cancer risk, so it’s a good idea to stay under cover while you’re relaxing at the beach. Wear sunscreen, protective clothing, and a hat to protect your skin.

The best way to keep your valuables safe is to leave them at home. If you must bring something valuable with you, keep it out of sight in the car. Lock your vehicle at all times to discourage thieves.

Finally, even though you’re there to relax, remember to stay aware of your surroundings. A little common sense and attention can help prevent most mishaps at the beach.
